As with all Registry cleaners, we recommend that you proceed with caution before fixing or deleting any files. We especially liked that CCleaner lets you manage your cookies so that you don't delete ones that are useful when browsing the Web. Using the Tools feature, we were able to manage our startup programs and successfully uninstall programs. One note: We did have to run the Registry cleaner three times in a row before it came back with no issues found each time it came back with fewer and fewer invalid entries. In less time than it took to scan, the program fixed the issues we had selected. In less than 30 seconds, the program had scanned and displayed a long list of invalid entries that we could then opt to fix or leave alone by unchecking the boxes. The Registry feature acts in the same fashion, letting you check off on the options you'd like to scan for issues. By selecting the appropriate check boxes, we were able to clean our temporary Internet files, cookies, history, and cache in both Internet Explorer and Firefox at the same time, as well as empty our Recycle Bin and rid our computer of Windows log files. The program works by first analyzing your system and then running the cleaner itself. We started with the Cleaner first, which breaks down your cleaning options into two tabs: Windows and Applications. Its four features - Cleaner, Registry, Tools, and Options - are prominently displayed on the left side of the window. CCleaner is one of the better ones for its ease of use and powerful cleaning capabilities.ĬCleaner's simple and intuitive layout will appeal to users of all skill levels. Thankfully, there are myriad freeware cleaners out there that help keep your system in check. Some of these trackers are useful, while others can be potentially intrusive. Overall, I am not to keen on using registry cleaners, so I am with you all that it's better to dissuade people from using them.Nowadays, cookies, temporary files, and various other means of tracking your Web footprint are par for the course. In fact, I only use it if I suspect there is a registry problem with anything, and even then I check carefully what it picks. It didn't pick up any false-positives, though (unlike many of the leading tune-up utilities), so overall it is not bad. Mostly found references to old DLL files, which were no longer on the system, thus no longer need, and a few extension association problems, which also wasn't a bad idea to remove. I've also used the registry cleaner in CCleaner a few times, but I can't say it's making any majorly noticeable difference in anything. or just do it with a single click in CCleaner. You could use the Windows built-in clean-up tool - which is slow and IMO sucks. They do absolutely nothing helpful and usually cause problems. In general, many of these do indeed do nothing useful or helpful, especially the driver update tools.īut useless temp files do accumulate over time in Windows, and they just take up HDD space for no reason. I never have and never will use any PC cleaning/tuneup, registry fix, driver update tool or anything of that nature. Many viruses still run out of the Windows temp directories. Then, I run the cleaner to flush the temp Windows directories. The first thing I do is run CCleaner and disable almost all of the start-up items. Also very handy when someone brings me an infected computer to take a look at. Very handy in situations like mine above. The best part is that there is a portable version of CCleaner that you can run directly off of your flash drive without installing. Now, I could go in each program's settings and try to disable automatic start-up, or I can just go in a single window in CCleaner and do them all at once. First off, many of the computers I worked on had a crap-ton of unnecessary processes running in tray. When you have 30 mis-configured laptops brought in the middle of the week that need to be done by Friday so that they are ready for the following week, it's CCleaner time for sure. On my everyday PCs, I use it daily before shutting down to wipe out temp files and history as well as Windows logs and a few other things (nothing in the registry, though).īack when I used to intern at an IT place, CCleaner has saved me hours, if not days, of time. Haven't been keeping up with the latest versions as of the last 3 years, so I can't say how good it is now, but their older versions can still be a huge time saver. Instantly became addicted to its functionality back then and still am to this day. I started using CCleaner back when it was still called Crap Cleaner (some 8 years ago?!). Ccleaner is the only one i use.Same here.
